SMC 6 point system

New Zealand is set to revolutionize its Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa program with a New 6-point system. This upgrade brings pivotal changes to the selection process, job prerequisites, and application processing. While retaining some criteria, the revamped program emphasizes a refined points allocation mechanism, aligning job requirements with the labor market, and introducing an efficient Skilled Migrant Category Interim Visa. As New Zealand adapts to global shifts, these enhancements signal a progressive path, welcoming skilled migrants into a mutually beneficial landscape of opportunity and growth.

Points System Update

Effective October 9, 2023, a new points system will govern the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa application. A minimum of 6 points is necessary to apply, derived from three sources: New Zealand occupational registration, qualifications (Bachelor's degree or higher), or income (1.5 times median wage). Only one skill indicator can be chosen for points.

Occupational Registration Points

Points relate to training duration for specific occupational registrations, with more training yielding more points. Eligible occupational registrations and their points will be listed on the official site.

Qualification Points

Qualifications earn 3 to 6 points based on their level and equivalence under the New Zealand Qualification Framework. Overseas qualifications might need assessment by NZQA.

Income Points

Demonstrating job offer or employment meeting wage thresholds replaces the Highly Paid Residence Visa. Points vary based on wage thresholds.

Skilled Work Experience

Up to 3 points can be claimed per year of skilled work in New Zealand, tied to job's ANZSCO level.

Skilled Job Offer

A skilled job or offer from accredited NZ employer is required, meeting criteria for hours, wage, and contract.

Continuity in Requirements

Criteria like character, health, English proficiency, and age (55 or younger) remain unchanged.

Application Processing

No cap on applications; straightforward ones processed in 6 to 8 weeks.

Interim Visa

For expiring temporary visas during processing, a Skilled Migrant Category Interim Visa allows stay during processing. Current visa conditions apply.

Options for Applicants

Temporary visas like Accredited Employer Work Visa can be applied for while awaiting resident visa decision.
